Getting back into Freshwater with live plants (high tech) am wondering what the feeling is about filtering water in Fairfax, VA (western). In the past, for a reef tank, I used RO/DI. What is suggested?
I use water with dechlorinator just fine. Maybe the dechlorinator even has the advantage of also dealing with heavy metals which I don't think carbon filters are 100% reliable at. Though the carbon filter has the advantage of less sodium and not having to worry about excess dechlorinator crashing oxygen levels.
I live in Reston and have always used tap water for my tanks. Occasionally I will use RO I get from Centreville Aquarium, but it's usually if I'm breeding specific shrimp.
Our meeting place is in Fairfax so the water there is probably the same as yours. We use that water with declor for fish all the time without a problem.
