Introducing myself and the family

We found out about PVAS through Kyle at Blue Ribbon Koi and have been really getting back into fish keeping in the past year. Currently, I am working on 3 lines of guppies: Blue Grass, Black Moscow, and Dragon. Also, have a Betta breeding project going on and Neocaridina of 4 different colors. The best change I made to the tanks was purchasing a LA-45C piston air pump to drive all the sponge filters we have in use. Our daughter has now set up a 20-gallon tall tank with Blue Grass Guppies non-ribbons, a male Koi Betta, and some Amano shrimps.

New to DMV from Uptown in Chicago

Hello, I recently relocated from Uptown (Chicago) and just finished cycling my first aquarium in over 20 years (running Fluval FX2 on 75g). I am starting with a textbook community tank while years back I was cichlid everything with tall rockscapes and large synodontis cats patrolling.

I missed the January meeting and hope to attend one soon to join. Will post separately for leads on centerpiece community fish (thinking single juvenile angel, group of juvenile rams, etc.) and on aquatic plants that will anchor into the driftwood---that is not java moss :-)

I am in Aldie (Loudoun County), VA. – Kind regards, Tim

Dive Headfirst into the Lush World of Planted Aquariums! by Nguyen Le.

This presentation will provide a comprehensive guide for beginners interested in setting up their own planted aquariums. It will cover essential aspects, from selecting the right equipment to establishing and maintain a thriving ecosystem.

About the Speaker:Nguyen Le immersed himself in the world of bettas and guppies, breeding these captivating species as a hobbyist. Selling to local customers and shipping to enthusiasts out-of-state, Nguyen covered some breeding costs, fueled by a determination to take his love for aquatics to the next level. In a bold move, he sold all his aquariums, initiating Splashy Fish as a side hustle, and marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. Later on, Nguyen felt in love with aqua scaping and planted aquarium which inspired him to learn more about the aquatic garden.Start Time: 13:00Date: 2025-01-25

Introducing Myself

Hello. My name is Johnny, I live in Washington, DC and I have a 72 gallon freshwater aquarium. It's a planted tank with some rock hardscape. It's been up for 2.5 years. I get a lot of enjoyment doing the maintenance and watching my fish. I joined this site because of the opportunity to sell in the forum area. Of course I'll post in a separate area of the website for giving away fish(I'm not a breeder) and selling hardscape I no longer use. I sold my car a year ago and I don't expect to make it to any meetings. But I will keep an eye on the calendar for certain events that could be interesting. Greetings to everyone and if you have any questions I'd be happy to share my experiences and lessons I've learned during my 2.5 years in the hobby.

Best,

Johnny Aranza

Aquarium and Fish related jobs

Happy Friday, everyone!

As the title suggests, I'm looking for information on any job opportunities realting to fish and aquariums in the DMV. My background is in database management and data science, but I quit my job back in October because I wasn't happy there and wanted to explore alternative career paths or job types.

That said, if you know of any jobs opportunities in the area relating to any and all things fish and aquariums or better yet, anything that ncorporates data and research into fish and their husbandry - please let me know. I appreciate any and all suggestions!

I wasn't sure which was the best forum category to post this in, so please let me know if ou think I should've posted elsewhere.

Most fish stores are always hiring around here. Pay usually isnt good though. Maintenance employees usually are paid better than retail staff but still not great. Getting to work at the Smithsonian is usually volunteer work for ages before an actual position. Working in animal care can also be frustrating, emotions can get high, disagreements aplenty. I've been much happier switching to studying aquatic science instead.
