We just brought in a great shipment of fish from Peru, with some really cool fish in it. I'm not gonna bury the lede here, so let's talk about the coolest fish, ever. Moenkhausia agnesae is a rarely seen tetra, from the Rio Itaya. They're known as the "purple line tetra," but this name doesn't do them justice. They're a bigger tetra, getting to about 3", a bit smaller than a Congo characin. They're peaceful, plant safe, and schooling. They're hardy. They are something that just has to be seen to be believed. The body base colour is a deep purple, with lines of orange and red squiggling over it. This group is about 1" or so now. They've been confused with, in the past, Moenkhausia simulata, the 'black line tetra.' This is a larger version of the same fish, but without colour. It gets to about 4-5", and is mostly a silver fish with black lines. They're super active, great dither fish for larger cichlids, and their pattern is really quite striking. I've found them to be a little bit more aggressive than Agnes, but not a terrible fish - maybe like a serpae tetra level (just in a bigger package). These guys are significantly larger, at about 2.5-3" right now. Next up, we have some blue tetras. These aren't the blue tetras you're used to seeing, but Tyttocharax cochui. They're a more delicate looking, clear blue tetra that stays incredibly small, maxing out at about an inch. Definitely a nano fish. Aside from being a really beautiful little tetra, what's utterly awesome about them is that they practice internal fertilisation when spawning. While on the subject of dwarf tetras, we got in a big batch of dwarf marbled hatchets. Great surface action, and in a nice, small package. And, if you want something different, the Purple Pencilfish is a relatively new pencil that blows all the others out of the water. Nannostomus rubrocaudatus is rarely seen, since N. mortenthaleri gets all the fame. I don't know why -- I think rubrocaudatus is the prettier one, with deeper red, leaning to purple, and a lot more of it. They're also less aggressive than the nasty Mortenthaleri -- though that's a low bar. And, last but not least, we brought in two really cool knife fish. Steatogenys elegans is one of the cool "thermometer" knifefish, which is relatively peaceful, doesn't get big, and actually shoals in the aquarium. Great barred pattern, lots of personality, and usually very hardy. Adontosternarchus clarkae is a ghost knife, similar to the black ghost, but with a way cooler pattern. They're peaceful, but shouldn't be kept with other knifefish, mormyrids, or other electric fish. Fish are available for pickup only until it cools down in Silver Spring, 20904. Agnes' Purple Stripe Tetra (Moenkhausia agnesae) -- $9.99, 6+ @ $8.99 Black Line Moenkhausia (False Agnes) -- $12.99, 6+ @ $9.99 Blue Tyttocharax Cochui (TINY) -- $4.99, 6+ @ $3.99 Dwarf Marble Hatchet -- $4.99, 6+ @ $3.99 Purple Pencil (Rubrocaudalis, not Mortenthaleri, the cool one) -- $19.99, 6+ @ $14.99 Adontosternarchus Knife -- $29.99 Steatogenys elegans Knife -- $24.99 Please E-mail BatfishAquatics on gmail for more information.

Hey guys, We just posted a massive PRE ORDER list to the CCA forum for this weekend. Lots of really cool plants on there, too. Check it out: https://www.capitalcichlids.org/forums/threads/its-pre-order-time.42552/ Unfortunately, we lose all the formatting when moving it here, so ... easier to just host it at one spot. :)

In addition to the APRIL PRE ORDER LIST, we are doing a pond plant list. Orders are due on this list by no later than 5 PM on Sunday 18 April 2021. Do not ask if it's past that date. Plant will be expected that week, likely Friday, the 23rd. Plants can be picked up in Silver Spring (20904) after arrival (I'll let you know if its earlier) by porch pick up. They can also be shipped, which should be reasonably cheap by priority mail, at your risk. There are minimums on this list. These minimums are by the supplier and not by me, I don't give an algae wafer. If you want to split an order with someone, feel free, and I will bag them separately (just let me know). But, I cannot take an order for less than minimum quantities. Regarding Marginal 4" Pots... these are the exact same plants. They'll either come in a little basket like what you get aquarium plants in, or a 4" basket. You're paying more for the basket and not much else. Pro tip. Minimums are as follows: Water Lilies: Three (3). Everything Else: Six (6). There are no lotus this early in the year -- I expect they'll be added sometime next week, so look for an update. This list will get updated next weekend -- there may be lots of new additions. I'll likely also do another order in May. All orders must be sent by e-mail to BatfishAquatics at Gmail dot com. Orders placed by forum post, PM, smoke signal, or stuck in the comments of a PayPal payment will not be honoured. I do appreciate people who send me money without explanation, though; I assume it's for pizza. All orders must be prepaid by PayPal to Batfish Aquatics at Gmail dot com. No other payments accepted.

Hey guys, These are the last of the tanks I've got to get rid of. I'd like them gone soon, so I'm going to rent a truck next Friday (the 26th), and take them to the dump. There are (approximate counts) 28 10-Gs, mostly Aqueon or AGA 6 15-Gs (like a 20-H but shorter) 6 20-Highs 3 40-Breeders (one drilled, two not) 2 55-G 2 65-G They are -free-. However: These are old tanks, as far as I know, they all hold water (they all had water in them a year ago). They are not pristine, new tanks. Many of them have at least one side painted (some are clear). Many of the 15s and 20s have patched holes from use in a flow through (they don't leak). Many have hard water stains on them. They're "fishroom quality." If you want new ones, they're available to pick up at Petco -- and they ain't free. :) Here are my only conditions on them -- If you take a tank, you're planning on using it. Please no hoarding, and if you're planning on flipping it, GTFO (get the fish out). You gotta take anything that's in the tank -- probably 90% of them have gravel in them. (Excluding anything of any value in the tanks that I've forgotten about -- random envelops full of cash, etc). No dumping the gravel in my driveway. If you come out here, you [will] wear a mask. We're social distancing strictly, as I cannot afford to get sick. That means I'm gonna point you at the tanks and leave you to it. If you're an antimasker / covidenier, GTFO. And that F isn't for "fish." (That also means that if you need help carrying them, you bring the help). Understand that they're free tanks, and I'm not keeping an inventory -- sorry if Viktor showed up 20 minutes before you and took the one you wanted. Understand that they're free /used/ tanks, and while I'm confident they'll hold water, y'never-know. You get what you pay for, right? :) The tanks are fairly neatly stacked now -- don't dig through the pile to get one on the bottom and leave it a mess; restack them so they look at least as nice as when you got here. Please show up when you say you're gonna show up. Anyone who shows up has to take a tank. If you bring your newborn baby with you, the baby has to take one. Everyone. Even the dog, even if it stays in the car. Seriously, I want the things gone. ;) Tanks are in Silver Spring, 20904 -- E-mail me (batfish aquatics at gmail) to set up a time / date and get the address. I'm like 2 miles from JFK high, where CCA meets. Met. Will meet again, some sunny day.

Hey Folks, Like most of you, I've had an abundance of extra time, with the usual "fun" things being somewhat less available. Probably one of the most talked about topics on the forums, equipment wise, is the aquarium heater.  How do I heat a tank over 75-gallons when the biggest heater my store has is 300wt?  What brands are best?  And -- the biggest concern -- how do I prevent a failed heater from cooking my fish tank. I've been super critical of most heater brands: they're all basically the same, and they're all built to fail.   The more generous ones come with a 1-year warranty, and I've emphasized my belief that if you're using a heater that's more than a year old, you're playing russian roulette.   It will fail, it will cook your tank.    Cobalt Aquatics changed the game with new circuit board controlled heaters - no metal strip to spontaneously fuse.  Unfortunately, their heaters are expensive, and somewhere along the lines, something changed.   Multiple people have reported them changing settings, overheating, and worse, popping.  These are typically heaters that are old, and like any heater, I recommend replacing them annually.  However, given the additional price, its hard to justify an electronic controlled heater when it doesn't, well, do anything any differently and requires just as frequent replacement.   They're great heaters, and I would recommend them over other brands. Bulk Reef Supply has heard the complaints of customers, and understandably, with reef tanks being among the most expensive and sensitive aquariums out there.  Heaters sticking or otherwise failing can be devastating to a reef tank, even without changing the temperature but a few degrees.  They've released a new line of Titanium Heaters, specifically aimed at larger tanks.  The heater is in three parts, allowing the consumer to replace each part independently.   The heater itself carries a three year warranty.  Its a titanium heater, and incredibly well sealed.  They're heavy, bulky, and solid.  If you hit your tank with it, it'd probably break the tank before the heater broke (don't do that!).  It has an independent controller, which is fully programmable.  It has a great hysteresis, which allows you to control when it turns on and when it shuts off.  Most heaters, you set them at 76, and a little below that, they turn on, a little above they shut off.  This means they're constantly turning on and off, which wears out the cheap components.  Even expensive controllers, the more they turn on and off, the more likely they are to fail.  With a freshwater tank, where minor fluctuations aren't important, you can set the heater to turn on at 72, and off at 76, meaning it'll never cycle as long as the temperature is between those points:  fewer on/off cycles, longer life.  It has a separate temperature probe, as well. Best of all, it has an integrated alarm.   If it fails, either off or on, it'll SCREAM at you.   BRS is working with Elon Musk to make it fart at you instead, but currently it beeps.  The heaters are available at: https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/titanium-aquarium-heater-system-bulk-reef-supply.html I am going to do a Group Buy on them, if anyone wants to go in on them.  Delivery to the November meeting, no shipping costs.  (You can also pick heaters up here, or at CCA, I'm CCing this post. :) Order deadline is October 29th.   You can e-mail me, BatfishAquatics@gmail.com, with your order -- prices as per the BRS website.  Payment must be made by PayPal to JoshuaWiegert@gmail.com (NOT to BatfishAquatics; I'm not making any money on them: its not a business sale.  Anyone who PayPals batfish will get a nice thank you note and no heater.    Unless I'm feeling generous, in which case I'll simply put the 'unbreakable' part to the test with your heater and your kneecaps.  :P ) Now is a good time to invest in a new heater.  Winter is coming.  Sorry, I'm so sorry.

As many people know, the hobby lost one of its legendary giants recently, and unexpectedly, Larry Jinks. Larry was a fixture in the aquarium club circles, always at East Coast auctions, conventions, and events. He was a font of knowledge, and always happy to help other aquarists. Many, many of us have unusual fish in our tanks because of Larry -- I think you could have given that guy two female Betta ocellatus, and he'd figure out how to successfully spawn them. Larry passed suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 69 recently, having been diagnosed with the incredibly rare Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CDJ). This rare disease, which resembles sudden onset Alzheimer's, effects about one in a million people each year. Larry's family has asked that, in lieu of flowers and such, donations in his name be sent to the CJD Foundation. This is a special Pre Order list, for ending on Tuesday, at 4 PM. We'll be donating 100% of the proceeds from this pre order list to the CJD Foundation. While it's obviously too late to deliver fish for the PVAS meeting, they will be available at the CCA meeting. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to attend tomorrow's meeting, but wanted to get an announcement up here before. You may also pick fish up that weekend in Silver Spring, 20904 (but if you're going to be here, just come to CCA). Larry did so much for the hobby, for our local clubs, and this is the least I can do for him. As this is a slightly different pre order list, there are some different terms and conditions from what you may be used to. All orders must be paid in advance via PayPal to JoshuaWiegert@gmail.com. Do not send PayPal to BatfishAquatics@gmail.com. https://www.capitalcichlids.org/forums/threads/pre-order-list-one-for-bfd.34590/#post-276240 Hey guys, the first of the PRE ORDER LISTS is up for the BFD. We will have a couple of pre order lists up for the Big Fish Deal. This is the best one. This is a new supplier we've been working with over the past 6 months or so. Fish from here tend to be a little bit more expensive than other sources, but they're just unreal. They come in looking like they've been in someone's tank for the past several months. They're fat, healthy, disease free, and just plain gorgeous; they're the nicest fish you're going to find in the trade. This is also a great source for plants, especially if you're looking for larger stuff for your AQUARIUM BEAUTIFUL ENTRY. The following fish are available for PRE ORDER until 10 AM MONDAY, 11 February 2019 . All orders must be received and paid by the deadline. We cannot accept late orders, sorry! Orders must be made via e-mail to BatfishAquatics@gmail.com. We will not accept orders sent by any other means. All payments must be sent via PayPal to Batfish Aquatics at Gmail . Please contact us for more information. Please see the bottom of this page for complete terms and conditions on the pre-order! Fish will be available to pick up at the BIG FISH DEAL. You must be a registered attendee. NO SHIPPING OR ALTERNATIVE PICKUPS. Please tell me what day you wish to pick up your fish! See the bottom for full terms and conditions. Cichlids, New World Apisto. This is a pre-order list. This list differs from our in-stock list available at Batfish Aquatics.Com . The fish on this list are currently not on hand, but available from some of our great suppliers. You may order from this list to get in on these great prices, and help fill up the supplier order. You must order before the cut-off date. In order to secure these fish, you must prepay via PayPal to BatfishAquatics@gmail.com before the deadline. Generally, fish on this list are at least 10-25% below our usual retail cost. This is an incentive to pre-order these fish, and help us "fill the boxes" from the wholesalers. Additionally, it allows us to offer fish that we'll probably never keep on hand, because we have a guaranteed customer in mind. Please note that I am not looking at these fish, and have not seen them. I can only give you a guestimate of size. I cannot provide you with photos (use google images). I am not picking these fish, and cannot guarantee that you'll get a "really nice male," or "one that has a lot of blue on him." I can pass on reasonable requests, but make no promises, or guarantees. If you are specifically looking for a special request regarding a fish on this list (e.g., you really need a female XL Jurupari), please let me know -- I may be able to order a bunch of them and help you get exactly what you want. In the event that a fish you order does not arrive, you will be refunded, or may apply the balance to another fish purchase. In the event that any fish you ordered arrives in an unacceptable condition, including much smaller than expected, not as described, or other reasonable problem, you will be refunded for them -- this very, very rarely happens (this excludes any "special requests; if you ask for a male and get a female... well, you took a chance!). Please keep in mind, however, that wholesalers use the same rulers as fishermen. A 3" fish may not quite be three inches. 📷 You are responsible for picking up fish as agreed. Any fish not picked up as agreed upon will void their deposit. Any orders held for more than 30-days will void your deposit (e.g., repeated rescheduling or ambiguous pick-up times). (Hey, if something real comes up, and you can't make it, that's fine -- but please don't leave me holding your fish indefinitely).
