In The Tank
Heater failed
Not sure how long my 20 gallon tanks heater failed. Found out when I went to feed the fish, opened the lid and got hit with a bunch of humidity. I tested the temp at 92 degree f, 17 degrees above set levels. This brings me to a great discussion of what heater people use and steps people use to prevent this type of problems. This heater was a cheaper aquaneat 100w that was only about 4 months old.
Grow out container with blackworms
Wire rack used with containers and bulkhead fitting to allow for water to flow between containers utilizing 1 100 watt heater and 1 sump.
This sump allows me to keep an extra bucket of water on the side to allow aeration for 24 to 48 hours. With a simple move, pump, and a few bags into a new bucket of water for a water change, which is a 25% water change daily.
So far the system is stable with no crashes in the blackworm population, and it just housed 100 Corydora aeneus var.albino fry.
Would you do this with Apistogramma's or Ram's?
Put multiple fish (6-8) in the same tank. ย Not sure yet which species. ย Tank is a 96-gallon custom, heavily planted, some driftwood, a light current population of small fish, I would add more rocks & wood to increase hiding places and territories.ย ย It's a show tank and breeding is not my goal.
Yes, I would do this with a 96 gallon tank. Sounds like there is enough space, hiding places, and lines of sight broken up. It will depend on the fish and their temperament though.

The hard part is running so many heaters on 1 power strip can start to tax the circuit and when you run multiple tanks it can add up pretty quick. There are a lot of great ideas when it comes to keeping an eye on heaters, running 2 undersized as well as having a one that monitors temperature. For some of the heater that I needed to replace I tried to look for titanium heaters that is for the tank size right now. But I did add a procedure to my daily tank maintenance which is write with erasable chalk marker the temp and use a temp probe to check the tanks daily to see if there are any changes to these temps.
