Flow Control Fry Tray

At the September mini-auction, I bought the Flow Control Fry Tray that Lowell’s Fish Lab generously donated. What a great device for breeding fish! The design is ingenious and the 3D printed tray is easy to assemble and put into use. Thanks very much to Lowell for donating it.

It’s really intended for growing out fry, but it can be used for some types of eggs. (Lowell has a video hatching German Blue ram eggs in the tray.) Wednesday, I had a chance to test this. I needed to empty a tank immediately. The tank had only a few fish, including a Badis badis pair. When I started removing décor, I found the male Badis guarding eggs inside a coconut cave, just like articles say they do.

I opened the container with the tray and instructions. It took me only a few minutes to set it up in a 30 gallon aquarium. I put the cave in the tray, hoping the eggs will hatch.

I’m very happy with the fry tray. It seems to me to be a big improvement over the various breeder box options.

If you’re interested in the fry tray, Lowell’s has an excellent video showing how to set it up and use it. Also, he sells it through Etsy for $40, or, if you have access to a 3D printer, you can buy the print files on Patreon for $5.
